Slowly but surely NASCAR is leaving the south behind!!
I love NASCAR!!! From the song by Cletus T Judd to the guys that host on the FOX network NASCAR has gotten into my blood. I never really was a NASCAR fan until about 1999 after watching the Daytona 500. I started watching every race I could find, and when NASCAR signed on to show their races on FOX and NBC it all seemed perfect. I think I was drawn to NASCAR for a few reasons, but there is one that stands out. NASCAR is a southern thing!! From its beginnings with the Petty's , Parsons, and Earnhardt's to its modern day juggernauts of Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, and Dale Earnhardt JR. NASCAR is all about the south. Its all about North Carolina where damn near all the shops and corporate offices are located. Its about a bunch of fans coming to camp/tailgate for a WEEK prior to a race. Its a place where the confederate is flown under the American flag....and its really not a PR problem. Nascar bring families together in the south like football does in the SEC and thats a GOOD thing. However recently there are signs that the old ways of NASCAR are disappearing. Racing in Mexico, Toyota and Honda joining the sport, races are dropped at tracks in North Carolina and added in Texas and California. NASCAR is growing, and I guess this is a good thing. Hopefully they will never forget their beginnings and the fans....we already have enough professional sports and athletes that dont give a damn about anything except making a buck!!
